A Fusion of Old and New!
Senju-juku (Senju Post Town) Walk from Kita-Senju station
Senju (Kita-Senju area) prospered during the Edo period (1603-1868) as one of Edo's four post towns, and still today, remnants from the Edo to Showa periods (1603-1989) can be found in the area. Since tax was imposed based on the size of the frontage, the frontage was narrow and the plot was long in the back, and alleys were created between houses. The area around Senju 1-5 chome, which retains the width of the streets from the Edo period, is now a busy shopping street, and you can stroll around while viewing the many alleys and the merchant houses built in the Edo period. Get information at Senjumachi-no-eki.
Today, this area has busy shopping streets, including Shukubamachi-dori and Honcho Center-dori. These streets are dotted with old-fashioned stores and new shops started by the younger generations.

The facial expression of the 1.8-meter tall Enma-Daio is scary. It is said that if you visit Enma-Daio, you will be forgiven for your daily sins. Also suffering by any illnesses, especially asthma and tonsillitis, is said to be alleviated if you pay respect to Enma-Daio.
Also, during the “Unveiling of Enma”, there will be many Japanese street food stalls around the temple, so, you can enjoy foods popular at Japanese food stalls, such as Yakisoba (stir-fried noodles) and Okonomiyaki (pancake with various ingredients)!
