A Temple with Seasonal Flowers and Festivals!
[History/ Culture]
Nishiarai-daishi is one of the three great exorcism masters of the Kanto region and is known for its beautiful seasonal flowers, where the flower festival (Hanamatsuri) is held between early April and early May. During the festival, you can enjoy various flowers such as cherry-blossoms, wisterias, azaleas. These flowers are so gorgeous and elegant that they are compared with beautiful women in Japan.
In this temple, worshippers pray for their days passing without problems. Moreover, there is a tradition for males aged 25, 42, 61 and females aged 19, 33, 37 to go to temples/shrines to ward misfortune. (Japanese people used to age one at the turn of the year regardless of one’s birthday.)
Many shops along the pathway to the temple sell mugwort dumplings, rice crackers and souvenirs.
It is a Japanese summer tradition to dangle a wind-bell under the eaves. The design of the bells and exceptional sounds produced as wind passes through help us feel cool and refreshed.
Numerous wind-bells gathered from all over Japan would fill the Nishiarai-daishi Temple yard and their beautiful sounds echo during the Wind-bell Festival in July.
You are welcome to have a close look and find out unique characteristics of each bell, then purchase the one you like.
The Daruma dolls are believed to protect their patrons against misfortune. Every year on the Setsubun (usually February 3), the day before spring, Daruma dolls that have completed their duty are consumed in flames as burnt offerings.
People who share the current year’s Chinese zodiac sign are joined by sumo wrestlers to throw roasted soybeans, as a prayer for another year free of illness and calamity.
Nishiarai-daishi Temple The temple fair is held on 21st of each month, and other events, such as a plant market, etc. are also held. also. 1-15-1 Nishiarai, Adachi-ku TEL:03-3890-2345 |
