Schools & School Children

Entrance to Elementary or Junior High School

Education in Japan includes six years of elementary school (6 to 12 years of age) and three years of junior high school (12 to 15 years of age) for a total of nine years of compulsory education. All schools begin the academic year in April and end in March. Although foreign residents are not obliged to go to school, parents may enroll or transfer their children into a municipal elementary or junior high school if they so wish. If you would like to enroll your child in a municipal school, please bring some form of documentation that shows the child’s date of birth (such as the Certificate of Alien Registration) to the School Affairs Section and follow the necessary procedures to apply.

 Educational Expenses

For municipal elementary and junior high schools, there are no admission fees, tuition or textbook fees. The parents must personally bear the cost of supplies, school lunches, field trips and school trip expenses.

 School Attendance Support System

If you are having difficulty paying for school supplies, school lunches, field trips and school trips for your child at a municipal elementary or junior high school, please consult the School Affairs Section.

Subsidies for Parents Whose Children Attend a Foreign Elementary or Junior High School

Subsidies are available for parents who have paid tuition for their children to attend a foreign school that meets the compulsory education level. Although this subsidy is available regardless of nationality of the child, foreign resident registration or resident registration must be completed in Adachi City.
At least one parent must be registered as a foreign resident in Adachi City.
Applications are accepted twice a year (in the 1st and 2nd semesters). If your child will begin school in September, please ask for more information separately.
